Free Inquiry 2—Kahoot!

For my second free inquiry, I chose to complete Kahoot’s Bronze: Host and Share course.

Kahoot is a website that allows teachers to create and host quizzes for their students; the quizzes can be accessed by students on their personal devices and can be joined via QR code or by entering the game PIN. While it is best known for its basic multiple-choice format, Kahoot now features some new student-led game modes that function more like video games.

It was also interesting to see all the different companies that have created and uploaded Kahoots to the website, such as NASA, National Geographic, and Disney. There are also lots of pre-made Kahoots by “verified educators,” which have been vetted for accurate and appropriate content.

While I was somewhat familiar with this platform prior to completing this tutorial, I was largely unaware of how to use it from a teacher’s standpoint. I was surprised to see how many templates were available for creating Kahoots (pictured below), and I will definitely use them as I create quizzes for future lessons. To make sure I was comfortable using the platform, I made a quick quiz to help students review basic grammar concepts (pictured below). I really like this tool because it is a way of making learning fun and engaging, especially for topics that students may not otherwise enjoy (e.g. grammar). It gives students a break from more traditional modes of instruction while still keeping class on topic. I also think Kahoots are great because they facilitate whole-class participation and engage students who may not ordinarily raise their hands during class.
